Before Those Little Paws Come Home

A shopping checklist and prep guide for your puppy's homecoming.

Get ready

A calm start begins with preparation

Bringing home a Multigenerational Mini‑Bernedoodle puppy is exciting. Having the essentials ready before pickup day makes the transition smoother for everyone.

This checklist covers what we recommend for new Stony Point families. You do not need everything on day one, but having the basics in place helps you focus on bonding instead of last minute shopping.

Nutrition

Food and feeding

  • Stainless steel or ceramic food and water bowls
  • Slow feeder bowl (optional, helpful for enthusiastic eaters)
  • Small training treats for rewards
  • Purina Pro Plan Puppy Chicken & Rice Formula

Keep your puppy on the same food they are used to at first. A sudden switch can upset their stomach. If you plan to change foods later, do it gradually over 7 to 10 days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the current formula.

Out and about

Collar, harness, and leash

  • Adjustable collar, approximately 10 to 16 inches (puppies grow quickly)
  • Adjustable harness for safer walks while your puppy is learning
  • Lightweight leash, 4 to 6 feet

Check collar fit often. You should be able to fit two fingers comfortably between the collar and your puppy's neck. Plan to size up as your Multigenerational Mini‑Bernedoodle grows.

Safe space

Crate and sleeping

  • Crate approximately 36" L x 23" W x 25" H with a divider (lets you adjust space as your puppy grows)
  • Washable bed or crate mat
  • Playpen (optional, useful for supervised play in a contained area)

The crate should be large enough for your puppy to stand, turn around, and lie down comfortably. A divider keeps the space cozy while your puppy is small, which supports crate training and potty training.

Playtime

Toys and chews

  • Variety of puppy safe chew toys (rubber, rope, soft plush)
  • Puzzle toys or treat dispensing toys for mental stimulation
  • Rotate toys to keep interest high

Supervise chew time and replace worn toys promptly. Avoid items small enough to swallow or materials that splinter.

Coat care

Grooming supplies

  • Slicker brush
  • Butter comb or metal comb
  • Cowboy Magic Rosewater Pet Shampoo and Conditioner

Start brushing early, even before your puppy needs a full groom. Short, positive sessions build habits that last a lifetime.

House training

Potty training supplies

  • Potty bells for the door (optional, some families find them helpful)
  • Enzymatic cleaner for accidents
  • Patience (essential)

Accidents are normal. Clean thoroughly with an enzymatic product so your puppy is not drawn back to the same spot. Consistency and positive reinforcement matter more than any single tool.

Nice to have

Extras

  • ID tag with your phone number
  • Dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste
  • Nail clippers or grinder
  • Travel water bowl
  • Car restraint or secure crate for travel
  • Poop bags and a holder
  • Folder for veterinary records and paperwork

Schedule a veterinary visit shortly after pickup and keep all records organized in one place.

Homecoming

Most important: calm first days

The best thing you can bring home is a calm environment. Limit visitors, keep routines simple, and give your puppy time to adjust.

Plenty of sleep, frequent potty breaks, and gentle handling set the tone for a confident, well adjusted dog. Do not worry about showing off your new puppy to everyone right away. Rest and routine come first.
